Check suppliers before your first order

A suitable collection and a low buying price are not enough. Check how the supplier delivers and handles problems.

  • Quality and sizing: Order samples or visit a showroom. Check materials, finish and fit.
  • Product images: Ask whether you can use the supplier’s photos in your online store.
  • Delivery: Check when your order will ship and what happens if items are missing.
  • Faults and damage: Confirm how you must report problems and who pays return shipping.

Buying clothing in small quantities

Fashion wholesalers with small quantitiesSmall orders let you test a new brand or style without buying large amounts of stock. Check both the minimum order value and the number of pieces required per style. A low minimum spend does not always mean you can choose individual sizes and colours.

On wholesale marketplaces, minimum orders often apply per brand or supplier. If you buy from several brands, you may need to meet several minimums and pay separate shipping costs.

Check whether you can reorder popular items. Outlet stock and limited collections may sell out in certain sizes. A small test order limits your stock risk, but you also need to know what happens if an item sells well.

A small test order limits your stock risk.

Buying terms for established clothing brands

European wholesaler with jeansUnlike the suppliers above, which cater to smaller online retailers, other b2b wholesalers may be less interested in small orders from a new customer. Your online store competes with their existing customers. As a result, you may receive less favourable terms and prices than stores selling exactly the same products.

Buying from larger brands already sold on established shopping streets often works differently from buying through an open wholesale marketplace. You speak with the brand, an agent or a distributor, who first assesses whether your store fits the brand and its existing retail network.

If you cannot yet buy large quantities, business registration and enough buying budget may not be enough. You first need to earn their trust before they agree to supply you. Ask whether you can start with a limited collection. You may initially have to accept less favourable prices, minimum orders, payment terms and return conditions.
